FØØD
An All-Ikea Meal
"When food writers write about Scandinavian food, they tend to wax (and wane) about the freshness and naturalness of the cuisine and describe it as close to nature. That's true--fish from the ocean and all that--but it is not quite the real picture. My two main entrée ingredients were frozen meatballs and frozen potato flakes, and there was something properly Scandinavian about that. In fact nothing I bought was fresh. Everything was preserved food. That is perhaps the true essence of Scandinavian eating: food that can last longer than you do. There are stories of farmers with storehouses containing edibles that go back more than one generation. How else would people get through the winter? Or survive a long sea voyage?"

Deck The Halls With OH GOD You know, far be it from me to criticize my family’s holiday traditions, but I have to say that the Annual Christmas Plumbing Disaster is probably the worst one we have ever come up with.
I mean, sure, the holidays bring people together, but last year it was while we were barricading the driveway against the waterfall up the hill created by a burst water main, and the year before that we got to strengthen familial bonds as we steam-cleaned the carpets after the sewer backed up, and the year before that we got to join in a communal potty dance when the toilets just kinda broke.*
I was hoping we’d decided just to skip it this year, but no—it was simply fashionably late. But this week it showed up, in the form of Backed Up Sewer Part 2.
Let me just say that it’s a good thing we got new towels for Christmas, because all the old towels are … well, let’s say they were on the front lines.
Given the somewhat obscure nature of the disaster, we had two possibilities: either we would have to flush out the pipes and unclog the mess, or we would have to DIG UP THE WHOLE DAMN BASEMENT.
Today, we are trying Option A.
I am really hoping Option A works, because let’s face it, if this drags on for weeks and includes taking Dad’s Giant Entertainment System and the Sewing Corner apart to jackhammer the basement floor, going to the laundromat and doing the dishes by hand, and finally recarpeting the stupid floor and setting everything back up. And I tell you, I don’t think I can take all the family togetherness.
*If you want to expand it to the Annual Christmas Utility Disaster, you can also add the year we spent three days in the family room sleeping in sleeping bags, playing Clue by candlelight, stuffing the pets down our vests to keep both pet and boobs warm, and eating cold canned food.

"Let's dance to Joy Division and celebrate the irony / everything's going wrong and we're so happy" The craft of translating classical Japanese poetry in 11 easy steps: - Translate word-by-word, marking the grammatical relations between those two-thirds you already understand; include both meanings of pivot words; bracket the words you can't find in dictionaries.
- Look up Japanese commentaries, paying special attention to the glossaries of archaic terms and modern paraphrases.
- Write a prose version in translationese, as literal as possible while still being comprehensible as English. Include pivot words in both phrases swinging from them.
- Comb through the grammars of Old Japanese in Google Books, looking for examples that explain the rest of the verb endings.
- Revise your translationese, smoothing out the language into actual English, incorporating your glosses and best guesses. Mark those phrases that fall naturally into 5 or 7 syllable cadences.
- Decide that you really aren't going to figure out all the endings of those line-long verbs and settle for the one you do grasp.
- Shape your draft into something approximating the 5-7-5-7-7 syllable form. Start adjusting line lengths a la Procrustes, trying to keep to phrases that match the literal meanings as close as possible.
- Discard that version, and start over with an ear to tenor of the original, as best you understand it, and to the sounds of English words, and to propitious line breaks (bow to all four directions and the zenith).
- Sit on it for a few days. Let it ripen.
No, longer than that. Put it back.
- Adjust that awkward phrase, that jarring line-break, now that you see how. Read it aloud, comparing it to the original.
- Only now throw it away in despair.
See? The process is easy, once you break it down like that.
Later, after I've studied for ten years, I'll report back on the art of translating Japanese poetry.

Writer's Block: What do you want to do before you die?
Sing the National Anthem at the Superbowl. Open my own cabaret show. Serve 100 Cinnamon Rolls in one morning. Get one of my longer stories published. Guest write for the last comic of Buffy or some resurrection thereof that is true to the series. Write an episode of Doctor Who that is better than RTD's Children of Earth (Days 4 and 5). Perform with Michael Buble onstage.
All this will I do if you marry me.

The Great Work begins. Am now running under Snow Leopard, also known as Mac OSX version 10.6. There is really very little that's outwardly different from regular Leopard (10.5), other than a better interface for fooling with folder stacks in the Dock. You can also play movies inside Cover Flow view, which I never use and neither does anyone else I know, so who cares. However, it's also supposed to have plenty of bug fixes and general efficiency improvements, and that's something I support (my favorite Adobe Photoshop upgrade ever was, I think, 5.0, when they did very little beyond making the whole thing much faster.) So there we go.
It's probably worth mentioning that installing Snow Leopard doesn't automatically upgrade your development environment, for those of you using Xcode. You need to install Xcode 3.2; I'm given to understand it's on the Snow Leopard disk, but you can also download it from the Apple Developer Connection if you want to be sure you have the absolute latest version. After I did so, I was able to load, compile, and run my old game engine project without trouble -- beyond, that is, the awkward fact that a few things I was using, such as functions needed by my .WAV file loader, are seemingly deprecated and nonfunctional under Snow Leopard. Ah well, who needs sound, right?
...Apparently not OSX game developers, given how much of a pain in the butt it is to work with sounds if you're programming in straight-up C++. Well, anyway.
Also saw Sherlock Holmes today. I'm not sure I'd say it's a classic of the modern cinema -- you know, like Die Hard or Con Air -- but it was a good time. Longstanding Sherlock Holmes fans, in particular, should relax, as the movie does a pretty good job of being faithful to the characters. I did have to laugh, though, at the presence of Irene Adler, turning up once again like a bad penny. (For those not aware, Irene Adler is the only woman to ever get the best of Holmes, and in the course of the original stories the only woman he ever seemed to have even the remotest interest in beyond that of a detective-client relationship. Given the dearth otherwise of important female characters in the canon, she perforce appears in just about every modern Sherlock Holmes story.)

[Link] | hey i'm back on the small miserable north atlantic island of my birth, to be fair my entire knowledge of flying before now came from the movie Airplane! and sharing a house for a year with a bunch of aerospace engineering students so it was bound to be disappointing; the best part was when the plane banked while landing so you could look out from your window and see the ground 'beside' you and imagine you were in a tower in an O'Neill cylinder or something.. One good thing about holidays away from the internet: i filled a notebook with a bunch of ideas (i.e. it finally occurred to my to just buy an el cheepo wireless keyboard and gut it for the bluetooth circuitry, then wire in a microcontroller to generate keycodes from chords... let's see how that turns out...). Probably going to go see Avatar even though it (like 'i am legend') is a movie i read the leaked scriptment of a few years back and decided would be shit based solely on that (fuck yes Watts overrules my own inept judgments every time).

Okay. I need to come clean with you.
You see, I've gone ahead on my own and changed the guidelines, the rules, of our relationship without even consulting you. That's not fair to you, and the lack of openness is not good for any relationship - our relationship. I feel like a bad lj-life-partner and I want to fix that by telling you everything.
It all began more than a year and half ago. Sure, it was simmering under the surface before then, but if I had just taken the time to think about and address what was going on, it wouldn't have come to a head. Well... maybe it would have, because I only have power over my role, not over Outside Influences. What happened was this: we were, most of us, already somewhat distracted by Facebook and Twitter. We'd talk about how we hated it and blah blah and then spend more and more time there. And less time here. Facebook was like that slutty girl in high school - easy, much less work, but also less satisfying. We couldn't stay away. At the same time, with the baby and my health getting worse (again. omg grr), I was finding it difficult to spend time online like I had in the past. In fact, I was struggling to cope at all. And then my computer broke. It died. And I had to use an old piece of crap Dell with 7 keys missing and no disk space and it would fall over in a faint with the effort f loading a web page. I couldn't take any more. I was hardly here, I stopped updating my websites. I even stopped using my camera because I couldn't download or edit photos. But I could still update Facebook - from my phone mostly.
But you know what? I missed you. I missed US. I kept trying with Facebook because it was easier to update with my broken equipment and you were mostly not here but over there. And Facebook sucks. It's like 2001 all over again. Don't get me wrong, 2001 was great... IN 2001. Do you remember 2001 - when almost everyone updated several times a day and entries were generally shorter? Some people updated like they were Twittering when there wasn't even any such thing as Twitter. But do you know why people on lj stopped don that for the most part? Because it's BORING. Because it lacks meaningful interaction. Because it was too much chatter. It was great for a while - when we couldn't stand to be away from each other for longer than a couple hours. But our relationship matured beyond that constant need for reassurance and feedback and then those constant, short updates became an annoyance.
I remember the exact moment when I had finally really had enough. It was when I was reading my friends page and one person's entry, in it's entirety was, and I quote: "*fart*". Really? This is what we had come to? I liked the playfulness, but I wanted more, too. I wanted substance; I wanted meaningful interaction. My journal began to change then, and so did my friends list. I wasn't the only one. I saw lots of complaints over the next few years about frequent, low substance updaters. The tide had changed. And so did my friends page. There were fewer and fewer one or two line updates and more and more longer posts. I got to know you better. Some people became essay writers. More of us got digital cameras and began adding photos to our posts.
But that change also brought pressure to "properly prepare" an entry. There was an unspoken rule against the one-line entry, or more than x number of entries in a day. Entries had to be detailed and forthcoming because the vague post (except maybe with acknowledgement and apologies) was also out of vogue. And then there were the days that were too full to allow time to sit and write up a 'proper' entry and we were afraid of 'cluttering' each other's friends pages with multiple entries, so we wouldn't write one, and that happened more and more often until we were out of the habit of sharing with each other, largely for fear of not following the new rules.
Recently, in the comments to one of my posts complaining about Facebook someone said that they don't have a lot of time to write longer entries and they are uncomfortable posting short updates to LJ, so send them to FB instead and I thought BINGO! We've become update snobs. We want all well-considered and carefully constructed posts on our friends pages. We want not-too-many posts because no one likes an attention whore. ... and then we're sad as the tumble weeds blow by and the crickets chirp because the place seems deserted.
So I have been rethinking what *I* want to see on my friends page and what *I* want from LJ. What I want from LJ is simple: I want you; I want us. And we can't have that if aren't making the effort to talk to each other - and if we don't feel free to do it. - You know what? I don't actually have an objection to more frequent and shorter posts. - I do object to continuous posting without ever revealing what the fuck you're talking about. Being cryptic is even less cool now that it was 8 years ago. If I can't figure out what you're talking about from reading the previous 3 entries in your journal, then uh.. no. More info or shush. - I also have to admit that I'm not fond of the Twitter stuff. The formatting makes it difficult to read and so much of it is one part of a conversation between two or more people that I probably don't know on a topic I can't identify. I don't read them and I don't even register them as 'updates' any more. - I love photos. Always have. - I like recipes and lists and schedules and plans and timelines and summaries. - I love travelogues, even if you only went to the dentist. [info]ohmyhead is excellent at this. He cracks me up. - I want to know what your kids are doing, how your mother is and why you want to strngle her this week. - I like to hear your interpretation of things, what you think it all means. - I want to hear about your goals, successes and failures, and when you just came out even. - Your work, your play, your health... all of it.
And I like to hear it in 50 words or 850... whatever works best for you. So I'm doing the same. I know my posts tend to the tl;dr end of things, but I also go periods of time with no updates because of time constraints. Obviously, going with shorter updates would sometimes work for me. (Though, as a person who rarely gets to converse with other adults, I kind of tend to go all verbal diarrhea on y'all.)
So... while I'm not making actual official New Year's Resolutions, ++ I have decided to put my money where my mouth is and update more - even if that means several times in a single day (I know... *gasp*). ++ I'm going to relax the rules a little bit, and try to be okay with shorter updates too. ++ And I'm going to intentionally spend much less time on Facebook - I've stopped using the apps and I make a point of coming *here* first. ++ And, more importantly, I'm making an effort to set aside more time for commenting, because as much as I need an outlet for my diabolical and diseased mind, it is the interaction that matters most.
These are my intentions and I hope it helps brings us closer together again. I want to be a good lj-life-partner. And because Facebook sucks.
*smooch*

Any solutions? I've looked through Macrumors forums, etc., but I haven't found conclusive solutions. He needs it for a presentation with his clients early tomorrow so hopefully nothing too experimental or reboot-happy, but any advice is welcome.

Operation OverLOLd What's that old truism? "They aren't making any more IP addresses"...? Well, this is it, soldiers. Word has come down from the Executives: it's time for the big push. We're crossing into MonolithiCorp's Class A address space tonight to take as many as five Class B ranges. SIGINT believes they are in the process of physically relocating their New England data center, so we will be attacking networks in the dot-150's while real-time IT support levels are reduced. As a diversionary assault, a wave of support tickets will be opened regarding dropped connections on their dial-in lines. There will additionally be DoS fire support during the actual landing itself.
The overall operational goal is to take the entire Class B 150 range, then press for armistice in the hopes of establishing new borders. The initial landing points will be the routers at dots 151, 155, and 159, referred to in your separate unit briefings by the operational labels Redmond, Cupertino, Mountain View. Secondary landings at dots 153 and 157 (codenamed Tokyo and Kyoto) will provide reinforcement and hopefully punch through to the interior network. Recent packet-sniffing indicates the enemy is largely defending with Linksys M70s but are likely to be upgrading to doubly-redundant Cisco 88s as part of this NOC move. If those unit replacements have already occurred in the existing NOC, the initial landings can certainly expect to encounter heavy filtering and substantial loss of signal.
Upon access, you are to secure and replace the router firmware and establish a secure VPN tunnel to the inner system. When the tunnel is in place, you are free to enter the main network to take and hold as many user accounts as possible and desired. Soldiers may take for themselves as much porn, music, video, and other recreational data as they wish from individual computers, but there is to be no identity theft or credit card fraud. You may loot these users, not rape them.
You'll find your separate unit briefings in email shortly. Good luck.
------ For consideration: We have seen the enemy and he is 127.0.0.1

Social engineering through the mail I have a book chain letter from my dad (who seriously never does these things, so I want to keep it going for him if nothing else). You send a letter to six friends and a book of your choosing to the person in the letter you receive. Just toss it in a padded envelope and away it goes, nothing fancy.
I need six people (or more!) to send the letter to. If you're interested in getting some books from people you've never met, this is your chance.
I think this originated in the Midwest, so I'd like to get some Wild and Radical West Coasters into the mix. I can't carry the freak flag all by myself, it's too heavy.

What? My ears are spectacularly messed up today. They were fine when I woke up, fine after the shower, and then they stopped working correctly. There's no pain and it's not as though I can't hear as clearly as normal; it's more like there's a greater depth of sound with percussive noises and at low frequencies. It's rather cool. I have almost no sense of smell but I've always had great hearing, and today I feel a little like Wolverine without all that self-loathing.
It's most obvious with certain frequencies. Techno and house music is killing me today. I loaded up a random playlist from Youtube and had the misfortune of feeling Sexy Bitch tunnel deep into my brain. If it's somehow laid a nest of David Guetta eggs and I'm eaten alive, let my parents know I love them.

Those of you who have upgraded to 10.6, do you feel it's more stable, less stable than or about as stable as the most recent 10.5 builds?
I am thinking about upgrading, but have heard conflicting info. about crashes, graphical errors, etc.
On Apple's own Web site, 10.6 is only rated 3 stars out of 5, and from what I can tell, the complaints seem to center around stability issues.
Edit: Thanks, dudes.

On the Drawing of Dragons Lots of people (and especially kids) ask me if I've always enjoyed drawing Dragons. The truth is, I was never really a Dragon guy until I tripped over them in writing the Imaginarium Geographica books. I wanted to reference the old mariner's map with the warning "Here, there be Dragons", and because of that, I felt there needed to be Dragons in the story itself. And since the books would be illustrated, I needed to sit down and figure out how someone who'd never drawn a Dragon actually draws a Dragon. So I did.
I think it's possible that four years in, I may finally be getting the hang of it. Below, the Black Dragon, from the book in progress.

Keep in mind that identifying yourself won't necessarily get me friending you; I'm trying to be a bit more circumspect about that these days, keeping friends locked posts within a tighter circle. If you notice that I unfriend you over the next little while, or that I don't friend you after you tell me who you are, I hope you won't be offended - since my online presence has become more public and my name now has associations with this journal, I'm working on a tighter lockdown of the more personal stuff.

Damn, but I have a lot of white friends. Okay, so I'm hoping to get the perspective of some people of color over in a post I made that's friendslocked. So far it's a festival of whiteness, and I'm afraid that if it goes on much longer, any POC who might have felt like commenting are just going to laugh at me/wander off muttering frustratedly to themselves.
One of the issues, of course, is my friends list. Wow, do I know a lot of white people. Sometimes it occurs to me how few POC I have in my life, and it bugs me. I mean, historically, I have a hard time making friends. But these days...well, I'm a little better at it. You'd think that I'd therefore have a better representation across my LJ-friends list (admittedly, not all people I know in real life or talk to that frequently) than 13 out of 275. (And that's counting generously.) Is it simply a question of numbers in the subcultures I travel in? (Partially, to be sure.) Am I less comfortable approaching POC for friendships than I am white people? (Probably, which bears a boatload of examination.) Do the POC I do know lack LJ accounts? (Maybe.) Are there people I'm forgetting to count? (It took me a second to remember and register that one of my friends is Filipino-American, and a few more to wonder if that counts, and a few more to wonder if he thinks of himself as a POC...)
Obviously I'm thinking a bunch about this stuff lately.
Anyway, if you are on my friends list, are a POC and aren't already terminally frustrated with the comments, please comment on this post, if you're so inclined.
Friends list maintenance currently underway.

Especially Quelea quelea, the red-billed quelea, which as just about every dictionary definition will tell you is a) the world's most abundant wild bird species (with about 1.5 billion breeding adults) and b) destructive of grain crops.
Cute little things, though.

Lumos Font and OS X I installed the free font Lumos, which is essentially the font for the Harry Potter books. (My son's having a Harry Potter birthday party and I'm making the invitations.) The font appears in Font Book, but not in any applications. Yes, I closed the applications before installing the font. The font file is in the proper place. It's a .ttf font. When I validate the font, I get three minor problems: hhea table structure name table structure Duplicate fonts
I figured out that my computer thinks the font name is actually "New" which was the presumed name of another font (the name of which is actually Purr). I'm guessing the font creator didn't name the font properly. By eliminating Purr, I can now use Lumos as "New". Is there some way to change the font information so Lumos is Lumos? (And at some point, I'd like to use Purr again too.)
Thanks!
