Ah Fremont......
Fremont once again confirms my theory about being less the "Center of the Universe" and more "the spot in the sofa cushions where all the random crap ends up in."

Case in point - yesterday they tried to break the world's reccord for the largest zombie walk.

See for yourself

Everyone needs a hobby I guess.

0 of (VOID)
Image cut ) The 0 of (VOID). It started as a joke but it became unexpectedly serious.

I was working on the Aces, all of which my main references titled "The Root of the Powers of (element)". Being an occasional programmer, with the tendency to start counting at 0, I found myself asking "what's at zero units of each element?". The answer was this card. It is a number card, but it is not suited. There is next to nothing to see because everything is undifferentiated - metaphorically, the Aces are the Big Bang, and this is what was sitting there, quiescent and full of possibility, before that happened. (This also ties in nicely with the kinda-bubble-chamber-looking designs in some of the Aces. I should probably go back and put them into all of them now that I think about it.)

If I was being truer to programmer lingo, this would probably be the 0 of (UNDEFINED). The suit is a null reference here, it is none of them. But "void" is a much more evocative word that brings in the pre-Big Bang metaphors.

It is a card of initial conditions; the butterfly is a reminder of how sensitive a chaotic system can be to those. We all know the "butterfly effect", the thought that the vortices of air coming off of a butterfly's wings could be the root of a tropical storm halfway across the world. Move carefully, for what you do may have long-reaching and unforseen consequences; move uncaringly, for your life is as short as a butterfly's in the grand scheme of things.

The butterfly trails a rainbow, which touches all four of the colors I used for each suit. This is a reminder that all things are potential here in the Void - nothing is firm, you can sculpt the nothingness into whatever the hell you want. It is raw Chaos.

The same butterfly can also be found in the Star. I think that's the only other place it shows up but I'm not entirely sure - the connections in this deck still surprise me sometimes! (It even recurs in the alternate Op art take on the Star that fell out of my hand one day.)

In general, this is a card of beginnings. This is the void of raw potential, not the void of the end of all things. Or perhaps it is both, if you like the cyclical-universe theory - everything collapses into a Big Crunch, with seethes for an unknown timeless time, then explodes, starting the universe anew. How will we define the universal constants this time?

From my original post of the art:
It has no elemental associations. It has no astrological associations. The void was there before the constellations were lit, and will be there when the last one burns out.

It is emptiness; how will you fill it?

Divinatory meanings (tentative): The Butterfly Effect, chaos, raw unformed possibility. Potential. Things are about to happen, and might happen fast. If ill-dignified, it is 'analysis paralysis', illusions of conspiracy, insignificance. Clusterfuck.

Also, if you have a severely different take on this particular card, I'd love to hear it! I know it's struck a deep, powerful chord with several folks; your interpretations could well end up superseding or enhancing my intended meanings!

When I woke up this morning, for a few minutes I was convinced that oh shit my day of doing nothing on my birthday was going to be overridden by having to go to the day job - somehow I was completely convinced it was Tuesday, rather than Sunday. Weird.

Looking at the lyrics widget on the laptop's screen after I brought it back up from deep sleep under the bed* and seeing the lyrics to a song off of 77 by the Talking Heads made me realize: it feels strange to have music in active rotation that was written by someone who's now so much younger when he wrote it than I am now. I don't think the cure is to stop listening to music by people younger than I am or anything like that; I'm thoroughly detached from who's being marketed to the Youth Of Today now but I still enjoy hearing new things.

I thought I was going somewhere with this but then I got distracted by looking through the watchlist of my sekrit alt on Furaffinity. She watches everyone back...

Anyway. No plans for anything today, looks like it's going to be a lovely day - maybe I'll just take a sketchbook and go out of the house for a while. Reflex suggests "work on Absinthe" but I feel like I should give myself a little vacation.

* a practice I try to avoid, as it's real easy to just take it out and spend hours lying in bed aimlessly browsing the web; I was reading some PDFs in bed last night.

Unshelved News: Jon Rosenberg

Today's epic and mildly offensive Unshelved Book Club reimagining of Richard Bach's classic Jonathan Livingston Seagull comes to us from Jon Rosenberg, cartoonist of Goats. (warning: usually more offensive than this guest strip. Also, not really about goats.)

Jon is someone I've admired for many years. Goats was one of the first webcomics, and I became a fan at my very first San Diego Comic Con when I was contemplating making my own comic strip. Watching his art and writing mature gave me hope for my limited skills, and when he quit his day job I became more convinced that I could do the same.

Goats collections are now being published by Del Ray. Gene, Jana, and I have all been enjoying the first, Infinite Typewriters, which just came out a couple of weeks ago. Sometimes rude, sometimes sweet, usually random, and always brilliant, Infinite Typewriters and its upcoming sequels belongs in the graphic novel section of every library.

Jon is also a tremendous pain in the ass, and getting this guest strip out of him was like pulling teeth from an evil chicken. But well worth the struggle.

Fireworks
I like them. I like setting them off more than watching them. I prefer watching them to just hearing them (that can be unpleasant actually).

Tonight we (my father, sister, a friend of hers) went to watch the show on the river.

It was nice. It was a year ago that CG and I first met. It was at a party, and there were fireworks. Tonight I had the next best thing to her being here (well, no, second best. I would, perforce have preferred to have [info - personal]commodorified present, if CG couldn't be here, and vice versa).

I had CG singing on my iPod while I watched. The last bits of the show I was listenig to Fernando, while the mist of the river drifted like smoke over the hillside I was sitting on, and the crescendo of lights was being blanketed by the powder of the bursting charges.

Not as much fun as loading the tubes, and running the wire, but I didn't have to strike the frames either.

On balance.. a pretty good evening.

I may not agree with what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to mis-attribute this quote to Voltaire.

Happy beer and explosives day. Please blow things up while drunk responsibly try not to damage yourself, other people, or your surroundings too much. Remember, the goal is to wake up tomorrow with the same number of fingers and eyes that you had when you woke up today.*

For me, this is a lazy day. Not as unpleasantly hot as it was yesterday, fortunately. Soonish, a bunch of people will be coming over, and then there will be game! Yay! And in fact several of them have arrived, so - laters.

* And if you wake up with more, that's... something entirely different.

Some poesy
A clumsy word, a thoughtless phrase
and he's waiting for the axe to fall.
it probably won't rise to that
but the mind is a muddy place
and the heart is in hopless thrall

The lover is a foolish slave:
living by looks and dying by glances,
with so much at stake, and so much to lose
it amazing that anyone chances

So he sits by the phone,
and starts at the post
Looking for the reprieve
and dreading the warrant:

waiting for the axe to fall

Just A Reminder
That you should always have any/all emergency contact phone numbers written down on paper, just in case there is a need to go to the ER. When I had to go in yesterday (nothing major, luckily) and the nurse asked me to tell her my emergency contact numbers, I realized that I didn't know them. I have them in my cell phone but since I no longer have a landline, I don't actually *dial* the numbers anymore (or even tap them in). Instead, I either use speed dial or I just scroll through the names before I hit send.

And yes, I now have the above numbers memorized *and* written down on paper. (The same applies for meds, too.)

iPod Touch apps
Looking at upgrading my 30GB iPod Classic, it's between a 32GB iPod Touch or a much larger capacity Classic.

I also have a T-Mobile G1 smartphone. Are there any apps available for the iPod Touch that would not be possible on the G1, or be sufficiently unlikely on the G1 that it might be worth the expense of an iPod Touch?

Transitions lenses
I just got a prescription for glasses, and I need help choosing a place to get cheap frames and lenses. I have insurance, but it doesn't cover too much, so I've been looking online. I know about ZenniOptical, but I'm hoping for a place that also offers Transitions (I know, that's a lot to ask).

If anyone knows of such a place, please let me know! TIA. :)

if you can't say anything nice, say "At least he's not Ted Nugent"
Gene Simmons think we should be hearing from the children who Michael Jackson abused, instead of dwelling on the man's unparalleled success as a pop star.

That's a neat sentiment, I suppose. Unfortunately, it's made less neat by the fact that Gene Simmons is a philandering, reactionary asshole.

When Gene Simmons dies, to hell with KISS. I'd like to hear from some of the thousand women he claims to have bedded. I'm sure every one of those encounters was a loving, consensual, deeply spiritual eight-minute experience, but I would feel so much better hearing it from the other participants. For that matter, Gene was a big supporter of the invasion of Iraq. When he dies, can we have his media memorial consist entirely of bereaved Iraqis saying "Fuck you, Gene?"

No, we can't. Because when Gene Simmons dies, it's going to be a piece of trivia, not headline news.

Looks like the back of my head has decided it's time to start shifting my sleep schedule around for real. I went to sleep around 1AM this morning, woke up about 5:30, then decided to be lazy and went back to sleep... for about an hour and a half. I felt a little spacey afterwards but it's mostly in the vein of "still sluggish from lying in bed cuddling my sleeping boyfriend for a while" rather than "oh fuck not enough sleep". Maybe tonight I'll try just cutting out sleep entirely and call it Day 1.

I have done some interesting things around my birthday but "tried going onto a completely different sleep cycle" feels like one of the craziest.

Oh yeah, birthday: I'll be thirty-eight tomorrow.

Housekeeping
My post about my new girlfriend was, for those who noticed, a bit vague on some details. Not least, I didn't mention her name.

I'm not going to. The poly aspects of her life are not out to her family, and so I am not going to risk one of them finding out about it from me.

I could make a filter, and use her name behind it, but that's not fair to those who might want to comment, and it's poor security for her. It would put a burden of keeping track of the filtering of my posts before they made reference.

I've done the dance of circumspection before. Marna and I were involved before Maia and I broke up, but the poly aspects of my life were less known then, and I didn't want people to think my involvement with Marna was part of the breakup (it wasn't).

So... what can be in the open, is in the open, and what can't be, isn't. The players in my romantic life are Marna/[info - personal]commodorified (occasionally referred to as, "my Canadian Girlfriend), and CG (which is a shorthand for, "CrushGirl) which was the way Marna teased me about her when I started talking about her; right after we met, a year ago Friday) is the reason for my understated squee of yesterday.

If I seem to be somewhat secretive on things, that's the reason why.

Apartment Pet Fee?
I feel like my husband and I are being taken advantage of, and I'd love to get some outside opinions.

We are talking to some landlords about renting out their 4 bedroom apartment in the first floor of a 3 floor house. We viewed the apartment a week ago and they showed us the first floor and the second floor. When we were honest and spoke to them about our pets, the property manager brushed us toward another house to show us a 3 bedroom (older) house that wasn't in good shape.

We have 4 cats, ferret, hamster, hedgehog, fish, turtle, tarantula. We also have good references from at least 2 landlords each that our cats are well behaved. All other animals are in cages. I spoke with the owner of the apartment and she seemed to be alright with the animals, even though they didn't like the large number that we have.

They are asking us for a pet fee of 50 dollars extra a month. That would be 600 dollars a year that we would not get back, even if our cats don't damage the apartment. Our animals haven't caused any damage before.

The lease also states that we have to pay for the apartment to be professionally steam cleaned, this could be taken out of our security deposit, or paid out of pocket. But the fee wouldn't cover that.

Essentially the property manager said that they are charging us "rent" for the animals we have. I guess this is normal for them, though they usually only charge 300 a year for animals.

Is this normal at other places?

Edit: Thanks for the input, I didn't know this was so standard. Seems like a rip-off to me, but I guess it could be worse, so I'll keep on the course of getting the lease.

Has anyone here had any experience actually using something like Mogi or USFidelus (sp?) or any of those other companies offering coverage for car repairs?

If it is what it says it is, that kind of coverage really could come in handy... but is it a total rip? What are the monthly membership fees? I wonder if it's worth it :-/

Does anyone have stories to share?

I've got a great car but it's almost 10 years old and over 100k miles now... I'd rather fix it than get a new one when it does need repairing ... but I am really considering one of these plans...

Thrift stores 50% off apparel for 4th of July
Goodwill, Salvation Army, and other thrift stores* will be having a holiday sale tomorrow. Salvation Army, in fact, had it today as well, and I got a pair of jeans (cool ones with sparkly thread!), a pair of capris and two pairs of nice office-appropriate slacks for an average of 3 bucks a pair. The normal $6-ish (one pair was originally 7.50, but marked down because they'd been there for a while.) would be impressive, but whoa!

*Bambino Thrift in Oakland, CA is one of them. I went there today and spent a whole $6.50 on a top, because I'm not going to make it tomorrow. :)

A rare political post
Sarah Palin has announced her resignation as governor of Alaska. I haven't seen the vids yet, but her letter to the people is the political equivalent of The Eye of Argon.

Read at parties and be sure to pass to the person on your left when you bust out laughing. Take a shot every time someone reads "I love Alaska". Down a six-pack of Alaskan Amber if you can read the whole thing and not say "What the hell?" at some point along the way.

running iTunes from an external drive
I'm trying to set my MacBook to run iTunes from an external drive. (I had this set up previously, but my hard drive crashed so now I'm doing it again... I've now updated from Tiger to Leopard so maybe something different is needed?)

I plug in my external drive which has a folder containing all my mp3s, aptly named "iTunes Music"

Open iTunes >Preferences >Advanced then change my folder location to MyName's External:iTunes Music

I should note that when I click on my external drive in Finder in order to do the above step, all the names of the songs are grey/faded out/unclickable. I don't understand why, but expect this has something to do with the problem...

Then, click OK, and out of Preferences. Shut down iTunes, then reopen. And it's empty.

Have tried this several times, and not sure what to do now...

Help?

TIA.

Bad Sign Number Six Million And Twenty
If you have ever asked yourself, “What kind of crazy motherfucker picks up a ‘My Chinese Coach’ video game and plows into it headfirst because it looks like fun?”, then, well, I have your answer.

Yes, in a casual attempt to overcome my fear of tone, and because I had not yet done something this summer that was so fucking geeky that I had other geeks trying to push me down and take my lunch money, I have started learning Chinese through the extremely thorough and doubtless infallible world of video games.* And I’m treating it like a video game.

For the record, I’m on Level 9. Soon I will beat Chinese. I’m hoping that when I do, the last thing it teaches me is how to say “A Winner Is You.”

Mac Mini Clock Issue
I have a mac mini which is shared by 4 users, only one (myself) is an admin

Recently when you log in, it will pick a seemingly random date, the year could be 1999, 2009, 2010, 2020 or 2025.

If this was down to a battery issue, I'd expect the time to always end up the same, but it isn't.

Usually I go in and untick the box to take the time from apple then retick and it's fine, but this time it wants to stay in 1999.

Before Gene Hunt comes bursting into my life in a Ford Mondeo ST220, can anyone help me narrow down what might be causing this.

Thanks in Advance.

Oi...
Sarah Palin has resigned.

One wonders why. It would be foolish for me, who has no contacts in the circles of Alaskan politics to speculate on specifics, but I can't help but think something is going to break which is would be worse if she were still in office.

That's the first part. The second... I never thought she was brilliant. Clever, cunning and perhaps gifted at the arts of politicking. That's one thing. But real smarts... not so much.

Not stupid but not brilliant.

I think, looking at her resignation speech, I may have to reconsider. This wasn't a silly gaffe, off the cuff (like Dan Quayle on "potatoe"), this was something she had time to craft.

Every one – all 15 of the ethics complaints have been dismissed. We’ve won! But it hasn't been cheap - the State has wasted THOUSANDS of hours of YOUR time and shelled out some two million of YOUR dollars to respond to “opposition research” – that’s money NOT going to fund teachers or troopers – or safer roads. And this political absurdity, the “politics of personal destruction” … Todd and I are looking at more than half a million dollars in legal bills in order to set the record straight. And what about the people who offer up these silly accusations? It doesn’t cost them a dime so they’re not going to stop draining public resources – spending other peoples’ money in their game.

It’s pretty insane – my staff and I spend most of our day dealing with THIS instead of progressing our state now. I know I promised no more “politics as usual,” but THIS isn’t what anyone had in mind for ALASKA.

If I have learned one thing: LIFE is about choices!

And one chooses how to react to circumstances. You can choose to engage in things that tear down, or build up. I choose to work very hard on a path for fruitfulness and productivity. I choose NOT to tear down and waste precious time; but to build UP this state and our country, and her industrious, generous, patriotic, free people!

Life is too short to compromise time and resources... it may be tempting and more comfortable to just keep your head down, plod along, and appease those who demand: "Sit down and shut up", but that's the worthless, easy path; that's a quitter's way out. And a problem in our country today is apathy. It would be apathetic to just hunker down and “go with the flow”.

Nah, only dead fish "go with the flow".

No. Productive, fulfilled people determine where to put their efforts, choosing to wisely utilize precious time... to BUILD UP.

What?

This is important? This use of CAPS FOR EMPHASIS is what she chooses to present to the world? This air of, "how could they do this to me?" is what she wants to be in her last official statement?

If this was some attempt to move out of the pressure cooker of active politics, to line up for a run in 2012.... well she doesn't have even the political chops I thought she did.
